Today, synthetic dyes are widely used due to their lower production costs and brighter colors. They also offer a wide spectrum of color options. However, they pose significant risks to human health and the environment.
In response to the negative effects of synthetic dyes, there has been a growing interest in natural plant-based dyes in recent decades. Natural dyes are considered eco-friendly, as they come from renewable resources and are biodegradable.
Vegetable hair dyes
In addition to the safety of plant-based hair dyes, other biological effects have been recognized as significant advantages. Henna (Lawsonia inermis) is acclaimed for its dual functionality in enhancing hair color while removing excess sebum from the scalp.
It also provides conditioning effects. Butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea), widely known as a rich source of anthocyanin pigments, has also been reported to provide sebum control and demonstrate similar efficacy to ketoconazole in relieving dandruff.
C. ternatea extract was also found to promote human dermal papilla cell proliferation and stimulate initial hair growth in C57BL/6Mlac mice, similar to the effects of minoxidil. Furthermore, Indigofera, known to contain the indigo dye, has been reported to exhibit remarkable antimicrobial activity. Although these natural dyes have been used traditionally and recently commercially for hair coloring, a combination of several natural dyes is recommended to achieve a natural dark brown hair color.
However, most existing research has not explored the optimization of natural dye combinations to improve hair coloring efficacy. It has also not addressed their long-term stability and resistance to external factors, such as washing and light exposure. Furthermore, a comprehensive evaluation of the safety and efficacy of the natural hair dye combination has not been conducted.
Study of the combination of natural vegetable dyes
A study from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Thailand aimed to develop a sustainable and safe alternative to chemical hair dyes. This study explored the functional performance and safety assessment of herbal mixtures as plant-based hair dyes.
Natural dyes were extracted from Lawsonia inermis leaves, Clitoria ternatea flowers, and Indigofera tinctoria leaves using an environmentally friendly extraction method with deionized water and ultrasonication.
The proportions of these natural dyes were optimized using statistical tools to determine the most effective formulation.
The safety profiles and dyeing performance of individual dyes and their combinations were evaluated with a focus on:
- color intensity
- stability
- washing resistance
- light exposure.
The study demonstrated the potential of plant-based hair dyes derived from L. inermis, C. ternatea, and I. tinctoria as viable and sustainable alternatives to chemical hair dyes. All extracts were obtained using the green extraction method, using water as the solvent, which could offer a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative.
Through optimization of dye proportions, effective combinations that produce the most intense color were identified.
This was in terms of the highest absorbance and lowest lightness. The combination was found to be effective in hair dyeing, resulting in long-lasting color that is more stable to washing and light exposure compared to each individual extract.
Furthermore, the extracts demonstrated favorable safety profiles, without damaging the hair cuticle. This positions them as a promising alternative to synthetic hair dyes.
