From a scientific perspective, skin aging is a fact. Skin ages and becomes more prone to disease, becoming increasingly vulnerable. This represents both a challenge and an opportunity for anti-aging skincare approaches.
Today, longevity means much more than simply prolonging life; it’s about preserving vitality, both physically and aesthetically, over time. Increasingly, the concept of longevity focuses on maintaining youthful functionality, prioritizing long-term health over immediate results.
Scientific advances have deepened our understanding of skin longevity: it’s no longer just about reducing wrinkles, but about preserving the skin’s inherent elasticity, balance, and natural radiance throughout life.
Making a difference with CLR
At CLR, the mission is to help people around the world feel comfortable in their own skin. The goal is to develop cosmetic active ingredients that truly make a difference for the consumer.
For CutiGuard CLR™, this means it’s essential to be able to zoom out from the extreme detail encompassing the intertwined network of cellular biological markers in all its complexity to answer the question: “Can this product make my skin look younger?”
To answer this question, it’s crucial to understand what youthful skin looks like and what differentiates aging skin from youthful skin. For several years, Galdieria has been the subject of numerous clinical studies focused on its ability to rejuvenate skin. Now, new studies have shed a whole new light on Galdieria’s relevance to consumers.
Young skin much faster
For the first time in the cosmetics industry, an anti-aging active ingredient has been evaluated using a unique “first impressions” study. First impressions are formed in a split second and determine how others perceive us. This intuitive judgment is deeply rooted in human psychology and is often difficult to express; however, we all recognize when someone looks youthful, radiant, and full of vitality.
CutiGuard CLR™ offers an innovative approach to skin longevity by harnessing the extreme natural adaptability of the red algae Galdieria sulphuraria, transferring its resilience to aging skin.
Galdieria underwent a first impression study to evaluate whether it could contribute to improving a person’s first impression.
The central question was: Can the effects of CutiGuard CLR™ be immediately recognized, positively influencing a person’s first impression?
Evaluators of different nationalities and ages were asked to evaluate the skin of two standardized photographs of the same volunteer for 3 seconds.
One photograph was taken before treatment with a cosmetic formulation containing 3% Galdieria, and the other after 6 weeks of treatment (twice-daily application).
After 3 seconds, the photographs were removed, and the naive evaluators were asked to choose the one that showed the best skin, based solely on their subjective preferences.
A clear majority of over 75% of the 167 naive evaluators preferred the skin after treatment with 3% Galdieria, illustrating its potency as a skincare ingredient.
The 3 characteristics of youthful skin appeal
The age and apparent attractiveness of skin are recognized instantly and intuitively, even within seconds. Additional in vivo scientific studies have shown that Galdieria can indeed make skin look younger and more attractive.
The scientific literature teaches us that three main characteristics determine the age and apparent attractiveness of skin. These are:
- Skin texture: A refined skin texture is associated with youthful and attractive skin. This characteristic includes not only the skin’s topography (e.g., wrinkles) but also its mechanical properties, such as firmness and elasticity, the loss of which is associated with visible sagging.
- Even skin tone: Youthful and attractive skin has a homogeneous and even coloration. This also decisively influences how we perceive people.
- Skin radiance: A key interest for consumers, and rightly so. It transcends skin tone and texture and is therefore a crucial but complex parameter.

Mechanical Properties of the Skin
Galdieria’s power against skin sagging was reported in the aforementioned first-look study, where treatment with Galdieria produced a visible reduction in skin sagging on the cheeks and jawline. This was confirmed in a placebo-controlled study that quantified skin firmness and elasticity using a cutometer (Courage+Khazaka).
The analysis of the different parameters obtained with the Cutometer clearly shows that the formulation with 3% Galdieria outperforms the placebo, that is, the same formulation without Galdieria.
Wrinkles
Just as important as improving skin firmness and elasticity is, at the very least, reducing wrinkles. However, there is an important aspect to consider in this regard.
Consumers understand that improving skin firmness and elasticity, thereby visibly reducing sagging, takes time. Wrinkle reduction is something they tend to be more critical about and less patient with. Consumers need fast results in terms of visible wrinkle reduction.
A comprehensive analysis of the effect of the test products on wrinkles around the eyes was conducted using photography using ColorFace® technology from Newtone Technologies, France. This technology includes standardized, high-resolution 2D photography. Wrinkle length (total number of pixels in the morphological skeleton of the area) and wrinkle area (total number of pixels in the area) were determined.
After 14 days of treatment with 3% Galdieria, a clearly visible reduction in crow’s feet was observed. The Galdieria formulation outperformed the placebo by at least 18-fold.

Even Skin Tone
Even skin color is another key characteristic in the perception of youth, even in the first moments of meeting someone.
Can a pigment-free skincare product positively contribute to achieving an even skin tone?
Our first impression study concluded that inexperienced evaluators based, at least partially, their favorable judgment of photographs associated with treatment with 3% Galdieria on more even skin color. This characteristic was also included in a placebo-controlled study.
After 6 weeks of treatment, remarkable results were observed. The effect of the 3% Galdieria formula reached 38% of what a foundation with pigments alone could achieve. The placebo formula only reached about 8%. These results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of Galdieria in achieving youthful and attractive-looking skin.
Skin Radiance (and Others)
In the studies described above, Galdieria was shown to be a potent ingredient that rejuvenates and makes skin look more attractive. As described in the scientific literature, skin radiance is another important trait of these characteristics.
In a recent study, a completely innovative way was chosen to measure the actual effect of Galdieria.
To determine whether Galdieria can actually improve skin radiance, a study was conducted in collaboration with international makeup artists who work on Hollywood, television, and fashion week productions.
We asked five makeup artists to evaluate the effect of a Galdieria treatment twice daily for six weeks on important skin characteristics, not only for them but also for the average consumer, based on the keywords: even, balanced, youthful, flawless, and radiant.
Skin treated with 3% Galdieria was considered significantly more even, balanced, youthful, flawless, and radiant than untreated skin.
The results obtained in this study are consistent with the studies described above and also clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of Galdieria as a cosmetic ingredient for longer-lasting skin care.

Approaches to Anti-Aging Skin Care
To address skin aging, it is important to understand the processes that biologically occur before cellular senescence. HMGB1, GATA4, and the related p62, as well as selective autophagy, play a key role here.
Only when a cosmetic active ingredient can balance these, can visible skin aging be halted and even reversed.
In novel and innovative in vivo studies, Galdieria has been shown to significantly improve skin, such that the first impression people have of those who use a cosmetic product containing Galdieria is significantly improved.
Placebo-controlled studies demonstrate that Galdieria improves skin firmness and elasticity. It also significantly improves the evenness of skin tone, leaving it more even, balanced, youthful, flawless, and radiant.
CutiGuard CLR™ sets the standard as a cosmetic active ingredient for maintaining and restoring the youthful and attractive appearance of skin. Its effects on the biology of skin aging are immediately recognized, both instrumentally and even by international makeup artists.
With this, we were able to comprehensively demonstrate that CutiGuard CLR™ makes skin look visibly younger and more attractive, fully fulfilling our mission: to make a difference for consumers.
