What is the Strategy of Cosmetic Manufacturers?
Regarding the strategies used by manufacturers in the cosmetics sector, there are three different types or systems:
- Exclusive distribution
- Intensive distribution
- Selective distribution
Generally, the choice depends on the type of product and the channel. Intensive distribution is chosen when the product is frequently purchased, especially personal hygiene products. Selective distribution is used for mid- to high-end perfumery products, and exclusive distribution is used for major brands.
The goal is to make the product available to the largest number of consumers in the largest number of stores possible.
Selective distribution is used when a product or brand is placed in a small number of points of sale within a defined geographic area. This type of distribution is important because it allows channel intermediaries to be selected based on their capacity, location, interest in the product, and similar competitor items. The goal is to project a favorable brand image.
Many companies have opted for this type of distribution in recent years, such as Lancôme, Biotherm, Cacharel, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, and L’Oréal.
What is exclusive distribution?
Exclusive distribution aims to distribute a product through a single distributor in a specific area, which agrees not to sell competing brands or products in the same category. The advantage it provides to the manufacturer is the differentiation of its product with a policy of high quality, prestige, and quality of service. The close collaboration between the manufacturer and distributor makes it easy to implement this quality program. Within exclusive distribution, the franchise, a contractual vertical marketing system that organizes the distribution of goods and services, takes on special relevance.
To ensure product traceability, the responsible person must be able to identify the distributors to whom they supply cosmetic products for a period of three years from the date the batch of cosmetic product is made available to the distributor. The same applies to other agents in the supply chain.
Experience throughout the sales process is presented as the key factor in the continuity of the manufacturer-distributor-consumer relationship.
The Role of Retailers
The analysis shows the important role played by retailers with low turnovers for the company. These distributors are also capable of developing high levels of loyalty if they are satisfied with the company. Therefore, manufacturers should not favor “large” distributors by developing loyalty programs and preferential terms just for them.
“Small” retailers have great potential, and their loyalty can become a source of sustainable competitive advantage in turbulent environments like the one we are currently experiencing.
