Human-on-a-chip: In search of the best version of skin

The Human-on-a-Chip methodology is based on a biomimetic microengineering system that reflects the structural and functional characteristics of human tissue, allowing for the evaluation of the effects of a cosmetic ingredient.

The appearance, texture, and color of the skin significantly influence the perception of beauty, but are especially indicative of a person’s physical and emotional well-being. It is the body’s largest organ and serves as a protective barrier against external factors such as the sun, pollution, bacteria, and climate change. It is a letter of introduction, a showcase for the world.

Hydration, hygiene, proper nutrition, sun protection, and exercise are some of the basics for maintaining good skin condition. However, today there is an arsenal of cosmetic tools for skin care that, in addition to raising the level of quality and effectiveness, are the result of advanced research that is redirecting the future of skin aging.

Human-on-a-chip

A few months ago, Natura unveiled its new Human-on-a-chip methodology, developed in collaboration with LnBio (National Biosciences Laboratory of the CNPEM – National Center for Energy and Materials Research), which simulates the functioning of the human body to safely test ingredients and products, thus avoiding animal testing.

The Human-on-a-chip methodology consists of a combination of biological structures equivalent to human organs, manufactured in controlled environments that reproduce the body’s functioning. The system, activated by a flow of liquids and solutions that mimics blood circulation, allows the effects of a cosmetic ingredient to be evaluated simultaneously on both organs and the skin of the body.

The implementation of the new method makes it easier to understand whether a raw material with no historical data on use is critical or not in toxicological tests. The results of applying the developed method enable the concentrations of new raw materials to be increased up to 10 times, promoting maximum potency and cosmetic efficacy.

I&D Natura

Natura’s Research & Development area is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of researchers who, through the application of in-depth knowledge in skin, hair, and microbiota science, develop high-performance products with proven safety and efficacy for humans and the environment, utilizing advanced in vitro modeling techniques, such as 3D bioprinted skin.

The use of biodata and artificial intelligence increases the processing capacity of the information generated, enables predictions, and brings greater agility and assertiveness to developments. For this reason, and as a reflection of its ongoing focus on innovation, between 1992 and 2022, Natura filed 1,186 patents and 683 industrial designs.

However, there is no innovation without respect for the environment and its inhabitants. Since 2006, this company has not tested on animals, which is why it was approved by the Leaping Bunny Program of Cruelty Free International and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Since 1998, Natura has invested in the development of alternative methods in a pioneering and innovative way, seeking solutions capable of providing the greatest amount of information, a key factor in the development of new raw materials for which no prior data exists.

Línea Ekos, Cruelty Free

Likewise, thanks to research at Natura laboratories, each of the active ingredients in the Ekos line of products has been identified, classifying them into four categories of exclusive benefits for the beauty ritual: hydration, fragrance, hair, and sun protection.

This line creates a connection with nature and creates moments of well-being with products enriched with oils and butters extracted without chemical processes from the seeds, pulp, and leaves of Amazonian active ingredients: Pitanga, Passion Fruit, Açaí, Buriti, Ucuuba, Patauá, Brazil Nut, Murumuru, and Tukumá, which provide unique and scientifically proven benefits.

Ekos is three times more potent, as it contains a higher concentration of pure bioactive ingredients from the Amazon. 96% of the ingredients are of natural origin, and its formula is highly plant-based, free of parabens, silicones, and mineral oils.

In addition, for the sixth consecutive year, it has obtained the UEBT (Union for Ethical BioTrade) seal, which guarantees that all the plant-based ingredients in Natura’s Ekos line were produced with respect for people and the environment.

It is one of the brands in the world to obtain this international certification, which accredits the best practices in sustainable biotrade worldwide.

Natura promotes a better way of living and doing business to generate positive social, economic, and environmental impact. It operates in 18 countries, with 907 company-owned and franchised stores.

It also has 20 Distribution Centers, with two hubs in 10 countries. In Mexico, the Distribution Center, opened in 2019, is the largest in Latin America, the one with the largest investment in operations, logistics, and technological innovation outside of Brazil, and the result of a R$45 million investment.
