Stretch marks are a form of tissue damage. We’ll tell you all about the best stretch mark remover. They occur as a result of dermal tearing, which is why a stretch mark remover is a highly sought-after product.
They are caused by sudden expansion of the skin, especially in areas where fat is most likely stored in our body. Obesity can trigger the appearance of stretch marks. Therefore, stretch marks are usually found on the breasts, thighs, and abdomen, especially near the navel, upper arms, armpits, and lower back, in both women and men.
Stretch marks affect the dermis by preventing fibroblasts from organizing collagen fibers to keep pace with the skin’s stretching. The collagen bundles are altered, lose their orientation, and organize into a fibrotic structure, while the elastic network is also altered. As a result, the skin appears less firm, less deformable, and less elastic. This usually leads to an epidermal tear, which can produce a visible stretch mark lesion.
Stretch marks could be classified into six different types according to their appearance and epidemiology:
- Atrophic striae (thinning of the skin)
- Striae gravidarum (post-pregnancy)
- Striae distensae (stretched skin)
- Striae rubra (red)
- Striae albas (white)
- Striae nigra (black)
- Striae caerulea (dark blue)
Over time, stretch marks tend to atrophy and lose pigmentation, depending on how recently they appeared on the skin. Thus, hyperpigmented stretch marks associated with an acute phase are characterized by an initial erythematous lesion, while a chronic phase is characterized by a hypopigmented and atrophic lesion.
Treatment to improve the appearance of skin with stretch marks
Regarding treatment, the therapeutic arsenal includes topical and procedural treatments that aim to improve the clinical appearance, reduce symptoms (if present), and prevent the development of new lesions. Above all, procedural therapies appear to be the most effective. Their mechanism of action consists of inducing minimal, controlled damage to the dermis, which promotes fibroblast proliferation and collagen production.
However, although minimally invasive, they are invasive and can cause transient discomfort, pain, bleeding, erythema, and itching, so they are not uniquely suitable for all patients. In contrast, topical treatments are readily available to all patients, easy to use, and characterized by few, if any, side effects, making them simple to use in clinical practice.
Current treatment involves invasive methods such as laser therapy, light therapy, collagen injections, laser lipolysis, radiofrequency techniques, and microdermabrasion.
Studies indicate that the combination of fractional CO2 laser and topical Centella asiatica effectively reduces the severity of DS, improves patients’ quality of life, and decreases associated pain.
Herbal remedies for treating stretch marks have also been studied. Topical application of plant extracts and vitamin-rich oil twice daily to affected skin yielded favorable results. In another study, topical application of tretinoin significantly improved the clinical appearance of early active stretch marks.
