Psychodermatology is a relatively new branch of science that combines psychology and dermatology. Although they are two very different fields, they have found common ground. Important psychological factors can influence our skin, and vice versa.
How we feel inside is reflected in our outward appearance. Today, scientific advances help improve the appearance and well-being of the skin, particularly with the benefits offered by the use of neurocosmetic ingredients.
The challenge of psychodermatology is to formulate ideal multifunctional products, suitable for each consumer’s skin type, respecting their anatomical and physiological characteristics (hormonal and genetic factors, skin thickness, age, complexion), while also analyzing their behaviors (smoking) or environmental exposures (extrinsic factors).
Neurocosmetics
In a recent webinar, Francisco Fernandez Palacio, International Technical Sales Manager at CLR, shared some interesting information about the trend of neurocosmetics.
Neurocosmetics are a crucial trend in the cosmetics market. For example, a revealing statistic is that 49% of young people aged 18 to 24 in industrialized countries have already heard of neurocosmetics. It’s a concept that’s here to stay. This has implications for social media, where young people are beginning to reflect on these new concepts.
When we talk about neurocosmetics, we need to consider what the end consumer is looking for. On the one hand, neurocosmetics should enhance more traditional concepts, such as reducing signs of aging, dryness, improving skin tone and texture, and stimulating collagen production. These concepts remain trending. But, on the other hand, thanks to the inclusion of ingredients such as neuropeptides and plant extracts, neurocosmetics can also address the aspect of overall well-being. This is the main difference between neurocosmetics and other types of active cosmetic ingredients.

Psychocosmetics
With regard to neurocosmetics, the concept of psychocosmetics is intrinsically linked to the very concept of cosmetics. In fact, cosmetic products help foster a positive self-image (self-esteem); therefore, cosmetics promote well-being, enabling relationships and the necessary conditions to achieve satisfaction.
Although cosmetics, by definition, are not considered medicines, they play a fundamental role in promoting health due to their ability to improve mental and social well-being, mood, and the individual’s quality of life.
Consequently, all cosmetics can be considered psychocosmetics, from deodorants, skin moisturizers, makeup, and detergents, to oncological aesthetics, which is defined as the specialized branch of cosmetics that assists women in caring for their appearance, especially when it is altered by cancer treatments.
Active ingredients used in psychodermatology
Pro-renew CLR™ Complex
It helps the skin regenerate its own microbiome, a very interesting concept. Unlike other cosmetic actives, we don’t interact directly with the microbiome. We believe our skin is smarter than we are, so we help it regenerate its microbiome. This allows the skin to regenerate and improve, reducing problems. The Pro-renew Complex can be used in any type of formula and for any type of person, from applications on the face, hands, feet, intimate areas, etc.
AnnonaSense CLR™
AnnonaSense CLR™ is derived from Annona cherimola, commonly known as cherimoya, an edible fruit native to South America. In Spain, cherimoya is cultivated for the food industry. Because cherimoya is a very delicate fruit, many fruits are not suitable for the food industry and end up being wasted. In partnership with local farmers, CLR uses these crop losses to produce a highly effective adaptogenic cosmetic ingredient. This helps, among other things, to reduce the negative effects of psychological stress on the skin.
After four weeks of treatment with AnnonaSense CLR™, 51% of participants with sensitive skin reported an increase in their well-being, 60% reported improved sleep quality, and 20% felt a reduction in their stress level.
CutiFine CLR™
Based on a synergistic combination of Vaccaria segetalis (cowhide) extract and Adansonia digitata pulp, CutiFine CLR™ is an all-natural, safe, and effective skincare active that acts directly on the underlying causes of visible pores. It works on all the major biological processes that lead to pore enlargement, as well as reducing the color contrast between pores and the surrounding skin—a crucial feature that has been largely overlooked until now. CutiFine CLR™ offers a comprehensive approach to minimizing the appearance of pores.
We have numerous in vivo studies showing that over 80% of volunteers, after four weeks of application, felt their skin was significantly better and were satisfied with the formula. After eight weeks of application, 92% of volunteers noticed a visible reduction in pore size. These results make the end user feel better about their own skin, improving its internal condition.

MultiMoist CLR™
MultiMoist doesn’t increase hydration like glycerin or urea, but it increases the number and quality of vitamin D receptors in our skin and, consequently, improves the interaction of vitamin D with the skin.
One of the main benefits of this action is hydration. In fact, we have numerous live studies demonstrating that Multimoist improves skin hydration, providing the end consumer with a feeling of well-being, making them feel much better and look much fresher.
These exciting new developments represent a great opportunity for cosmetics companies. The next step in this emerging trend is innovation in research and development of new methodologies, strategies, and techniques for formulating cosmetic products that open up a new world of benefits and claims.
Consumers are eager for new experiences that allow them to adopt an unconventional beauty routine, while also meeting their demand for more affordable prices.
